Raising Dissolved Oxygen In Hydroponics
Share
In hydroponics, maintaining optimal oxygen levels is crucial for root health and plant growth. At Greybull Valley Produce, we've tried many oxygenation methods, each with its own set of challenges, leading us to develop a groundbreaking solution: the AirCone.
The Quest for Effective Oxygenation
Our initial approach involved investing approximately $2,000 in regenerative air blowers. While they provided some aeration and the most annoying noise ever, the results were underwhelming. To keep oxygen levels as high as possible, we would change our air diffuser hoses monthly, incurring monthly expenses between $200 and $400 per month. Despite this, our dissolved oxygen levels plateaued around 6 mg/L, insufficient for optimal plant growth.
In our battle against Pythium (root rot), we turned to a wide variety of treatments like hydrogen peroxide and bleach, as well as fungicides such as Reliant. We also introduced beneficial microbes into the system. However, these measures only provided temporary relief and further drove up costs.
Throwing $$$ at the Problem💸
Seeking a more advanced solution, we invested nearly $13,000 in a nano bubbler. This device promised superior oxygenation but came with its own set of challenges. Operating at almost 15 amps, it was energy-intensive and costly to run continuously. After just nine months, the nano bubbler failed, leaving us with an expensive paperweight. Moreover, our Pythium issues persisted, and root health remained suboptimal.
The Birth of the AirCone
Determined to find a low cost, sustainable and efficient solution, we developed the AirCone. This innovative aerator is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing circulation pumps, eliminating the need for additional equipment. The AirCone operates silently and can achieve crazy high dissolved oxygen, addressing the shortcomings of previous methods.
By utilizing an oxygen concentrator in conjunction with the AirCone, we've achieved dissolved oxygen levels between 18 to 20 mg/L (and as high as 46 mg/L!)—ideal for cultivating lettuce and herbs. This optimal oxygenation promotes the growth of beneficial aerobic bacteria, which process waste and improve water quality, while inhibiting harmful anaerobic bacteria like Pythium. The result is enhanced nutrient uptake, robust root health, and vigorous plant growth.
Transforming Hydroponic Systems
Implementing the AirCone has revolutionized our hydroponic operations:
-
Elimination of Chemical Treatments: With adequate oxygenation, we've discontinued the use of hydrogen peroxide, bleach, and fungicides, fostering a more natural and sustainable growing environment. 🌱
-
Cost Efficiency: By integrating the AirCone with our existing circulation system, we've reduced energy consumption and eliminated the recurring costs associated with air diffuser hoses and chemical additives. 💰
-
Enhanced Plant Health: Our crops now exhibit longer, whiter roots free from rot, leading to increased yields and healthier produce. 🥦
The AirCone's impact extends beyond deep water culture systems. In nutrient film technique (NFT) systems, it effectively addresses biofilm buildup in channels and gutters, common breeding grounds for Pythium. Incorporating the AirCone into NFT setups has resulted in cleaner systems and more robust plant growth.
A New Standard in Hydroponics
Efficient oxygenation is crucial in hydroponics. The AirCone offers a cost-effective, reliable, and chemical-free solution to this challenge. We believe it will become the industry standard, helping growers achieve healthier crops and higher yields. We're proud to support the evolution of hydroponic farming with solutions that help small farms thrive.
